How to have a smart baby

Everyone wants the best for their children and one way to achieve this is to try and invest in the baby's intelligence, so how do you make your baby cleverer? Well there are lots of ways to do this and it involves stimulating his mind so that there can be more connections made in the cortex of the brain, there more quality connections there are the more intelligent your baby is likely to be.

Visual Stimulation
Always stimulate your baby visually, put them near lots of colours and material that contain a lot of colours, if you have a nursery for your baby then make it as bright as possible and include as many letters and numbers drawn on the wall so that when the baby looks around they can see these symbols which as the basis of reading and writing, the quicker the baby is exposed to the alphabet and numbers the quicker they can absorb and learn at school, this is about giving your baby a head start.

Sound Stimulation
Make your baby listen to sound that is educational, I don't mean turn the TV on Bloomberg and make the baby watch this, what I mean is find some educational DVD such as My Baby Can Read and then make the baby watch this. There are literally hundreds of DVD's on the net for early learning and I would really recommend that you invest in one of these, these DVD's will usually have a voice that is appealing to the baby and will link words and objects together which will definitely make your baby smarter.

Touch/ Feel
Always communicate with the baby and talk to them, always encourage them and praise them when they have done something right. If you want you can get a book and then read to your child every day, this will develop his ability to concentrate and absorb information, the more colourful the book the better. You should also try to make reading fun and engaging, always ask the baby questions and then look for a answer, this will provide the baby with the stimulus to find a solution.

Problem Solving
Always create mini problems for babies like putting their toy beyond reach and provide something that when they use it will allow them to get the toy, little scenarios like these will help the child develop their problem solving side and really make them analytic thinkers, if you can create 5 or 5 tasks like this it will really develop their logical side.

Prenatal Choline For A Smarter Baby and Adult
This is very promising research not only for the brain boost the child/adult gets but also the ability for the brain to resist age related cognitive decline. It appears that the crucial time for a boost in choline is in the second half of pregnancy. But since choline is important for the development of the brain throughout pregnancy and the 1st year of the child - it appears that choline should probably be taken early on and through the 1st year where it will pass through lactation. A study in Denver commencing soon will be providing 900mg of choline throughout pregnancy. This appears to be well within safe levels for the mother and child and should allow for some methylation of the cdkn3 gene so that a boost to memory centers occurs.

The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences recommends 450mg of choline for pregnant women and 550mg for lactating women. But the key question is at what levels does choline methylate, or turn off the cdkn3 gene that limits stem cell proliferation in the hippocampus. The studies on rodents seem to use 3 or more times the amount of their regular intake of choline. The research so far seems to indicate that the more choline that is ingested the greater the gene silencing that occurs - the more certain sections of the brain are enhanced.

It doesn't appear that an optimal dose for humans has been set, although I suspect that lead researchers in this field have a general idea.
Note: At a talk at the Oregon Health Sciences University in October 2007 – one of the top researchers on Choline (Dr. Zeisel) spoke. Zeisel pointed out that choline is very important for the fetal brain, and can be obtained as a supplement as phosphatidyl choline . 2-4 eggs per day provide enough choline during pregnancy. The current daily value is 450 mg, but it would be useful to set the level at 850 mg. It is like fish oil, having lifelong effect on an infant's early brain development. Note that DEA in sunscreen blocks the function of choline, so pregnant women must not use sunscreen with DEA.

Supplements
There has been much talk about taking supplements to help children accelerate their learning, personally I feel that if it can make a little difference then it is definitely worth it, taking supplements like Fish Oil helps the child concentrate more and improves the brains activity, there has been research about this that's quite conclusive. If you can help your baby to concentrate more then they can absorb more information early in life that will make a tremendous difference in the future.
