Summer can be a very dangerous time for infants if they are not supervised correctly. You should always make sure that they aren't too hot, dressed for the weather, and aren't sweating if outdoors (or indoors for that matter). Summer is right around the corner, so I have compiled a list of ten summer heath risks for infants that you need to be aware of.
Sunburn - Sunburn is so common in infants! People never really think to apply sun block to their infant because it "may not be safe" or because their baby will be in the shade, but the truth of the matter is that no matter where your child is outside, they should have a generous amount of sunblock on. From experience, there is nothing worse than a sunburnt baby.
Drowning - Swimming is a fairly common summer activity, and parents love to take their babies in the water. It only takes a few inches of water for an infant to drown in, especially if they aren't yet at the age where they can get themselves up. Be extra careful when taking your child near any water.
Insect Bites - Babies can be allergic to just about anything, and you don't know it because they are new and have yet to experience much of life. Mosquitos are one insect that some babies have allergic reactions to, and they also can carry West Nile Virus. Spiders also seem to come out more often during the summer, so be careful and check your child after each outting to make sure he/she doesn't have any bites. If you notice a bite, try applying Benadryl Cream to reduce inflamation.
Allergies - It is normal for your infant to sneeze sometimes being that their littlelung systems are new, but pollen and flowers can cause a different type of sneezing. Sneezing that has to do with allergies. During the summer, everything that can trigger allergies is in bloom. Ask your infant's pediatricion for medicine reccomendations if you plan on being outside alot.
Heat Exhaustion / Heat Stroke - Very common in children during the hot summer months; it is important to make sureyour baby doesn't get overheated because heat exhaustion can be extremely serious. Remember to NEVER leave your infant in a car alone.
Pesticide Posioning - Again, lots of bugs are out during the summer so you will probably be having pest control come spray your house and yard. Make sure your child doesn't play in or around these areas for atleast a few days after the spraying is complete. If you think your child has been posioned, call 911 ASAP.
Kidnapping - Summer is so popular for kidnapping, it's such a sad situation. People are crazy and you never know who might be vacationing in your town or city. Keep an eye on your child at all times.
Dehydration - Being that it is so hot, babies can get dehydrated quickly. Make sure they have a sippy cup of juice if they are able to drink it, or try giving them a little extra formula if you plan on taking them outside.
SIDS - We really don't know what causes SIDS, but it is important that you do everything you can to prevent it. Don't let baby sleep in a room that is too hot from the summer heat. You should have a fan or AC running ALWAYS.
Playground Injuries - Soon-To-Be toddlers love playing at the playground. Being that they are so little, it is important to keep a close eye on them while playing on those big jungle-gym type toys. Keep your baby close to you at all times.
